  4.     DIED. Andreas Hillgruber, 64, West German historian whose
  5. controversial interpretation of the Nazi mass murder of Jews
  6. touched off a heated debate about the meaning of the Holocaust;
  7. of throat cancer; on May 8 in Cologne. In his 1986 book Two
  8. Kinds of Destruction: The Shattering of the German Reich and the
  9. End of European Jewry, Hillgruber argued that the Nazi
  10. extermination program, while atrocious, was not historically
  11. unique. Hillgruber also justified the last stand of Hitler's
  12. army against the approaching Soviets, claiming that it allowed
  13. civilians to escape the "revenge organs of the Red Army."
