- DIED. Andreas Hillgruber, 64, West German historian whose
- controversial interpretation of the Nazi mass murder of Jews
- touched off a heated debate about the meaning of the Holocaust;
- of throat cancer; on May 8 in Cologne. In his 1986 book Two
- Kinds of Destruction: The Shattering of the German Reich and the
- End of European Jewry, Hillgruber argued that the Nazi
- extermination program, while atrocious, was not historically
- unique. Hillgruber also justified the last stand of Hitler's
- army against the approaching Soviets, claiming that it allowed
- civilians to escape the "revenge organs of the Red Army."
